Description
Urogynecologists treat a variety of female pelvic floor disorders including pelvic prolapse problems, congenital anomalies of the vagina, bladder problems, and female sexual dysfunction. At AZ Urogynecology & Pelvic Health Center, Dr. Akl treats a variety of issues including:
Vaginal Mesh
To treat urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse, vaginal mesh implants are often used. These meshes do have the potential for complications though, which can include painful sexual intercourse, increased incontinence, erosion into the vaginal walls, vaginal or pelvic pain, and infection. At AZ Urogynecology & Pelvic Health Center, Dr Akl has several treatment options available depending on the severity and natural of the complication. These treatments can include pelvic floor physical therapy, vaginal creams, or removal of the vaginal mesh with vaginal repair being repeated with a non-mesh procedure.
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence can have several different causes and treatments. Urinary leakage when coughing, laughing, or sneezing is one symptom of "stress urinary leakage,” and is not a normal sign of aging. This can be due to a "dropped urethra”, where the angle of the urethra has changed, or can be a result of weakness of the sphincter muscle.
